TL;DR Start with the two free tools every local business already has: Google Business Profile and Search Console. Then add one paid tool for the job you can't do by hand, usually rankings by area or citations. And measure the result on your own site, because no local SEO tool sees the call, the booking or the store visit that the ranking produced.

Local SEO tools are sold as suites, but the work splits into five jobs: managing the business profile, tracking rankings by area, keeping citations consistent, handling reviews, and measuring what all of it brings in. Most teams need one tool per job, not every tool for every job.

Here are eight picks, grouped by the job they do best, and what none of them measures.

The free tools: start here

1. Google Business Profile

The profile is where most local searches end, so it is the first tool, not an extra. Its performance report shows how people found the listing and what they did next: calls, direction requests and website clicks. It is also where you answer reviews, publish posts and keep hours, categories and photos up to date.

Best for: every local business. Watch out: the numbers are aggregated per profile, and they will not match what your analytics shows for the same visits.

2. Google Search Console

Search Console covers the organic side: the queries, pages and positions that bring traffic from regular results, including "near me" and city queries to your location pages. It is the place to spot a location page that lost rankings or never got indexed. If you are not sure which numbers to read in which tool, we compared Search Console and Google Analytics side by side.

Best for: location pages and multi-location sites. Watch out: it does not report Maps or local pack rankings.

GA4 is where local visibility becomes leads. Add UTM parameters to the website link of your Business Profile, and to booking or menu links if you use them, so those visits stop landing in a generic organic or direct bucket. Search Engine Land's guide covers the options; the rule that matters is to pick one convention, lowercase, and use it everywhere.

Best for: knowing which locations bring calls, bookings and sales. Watch out: UTMs only tag clicks. Calls straight from the listing and direction requests never reach your site.

Rankings by area

4. Local Falcon

Local Falcon is a geo-grid rank tracker: it runs the same search from a grid of points around your business and shows where you rank at each one, on a map. Local rankings change from one street to the next, and a single position hides that. It also reports whether AI assistants recommend the business in that area.

Best for: seeing where in a city you stop showing up. Watch out: it tracks maps and AI answers, not organic rankings, on-page issues or backlinks.

5. BrightLocal

BrightLocal bundles a Local Search Grid, a Local Rank Tracker, a Citation Tracker, a Google Business Profile audit, a local search audit and a Reputation Manager for reviews. It is the closest thing to a default suite for agencies that run many locations.

Best for: agencies and multi-location brands that want rankings, citations and reviews in one place. Watch out: plans and limits change often; check the current pricing page before comparing.

Citations and listings

6. Whitespark

Whitespark's Local Citation Finder looks at where your competitors are listed and where you are missing, and sorts the opportunities so the easiest come first. It also tracks your existing listings over time, and Whitespark sells a local rank tracker alongside it.

Best for: building and cleaning citations. Watch out: it is a specialist: no technical SEO or backlink analysis.

7. Semrush Local

Semrush Local adds two things to the Semrush suite: a Map Rank Tracker that shows Google Maps rankings at many points around your area, and Listing Management, which distributes your business data to directories and helps find duplicate listings.

Best for: teams already on Semrush for organic SEO. Watch out: it is priced per location, which adds up for chains.

All-in-one for a single business

8. Localo

Localo is built around the Google Business Profile: rank tracking by location, a profile audit, review replies drafted with AI, scheduled posts and a weekly list of tasks based on your profile and your competitors.

Best for: a single business or a small team without an SEO specialist. Watch out: users report that map accuracy varies; compare it with a dedicated grid tracker before relying on it.

What no local SEO tool measures

Every tool above stops at the listing. They tell you that you rank third in the north of the city and that clicks to your website went up. None of them sees what happened next on your site: the click on the phone number, the booking form, the store locator search, the purchase.

That part lives in your analytics, and it is the part that breaks quietly. A redesign renames the click_to_call event. A new booking widget loads in an iframe and stops sending anything. Someone edits the profile's website link and drops the UTMs, and the location's traffic moves to direct. The rankings keep looking great while the leads seem to fall, and the SEO gets the blame.

To measure local SEO properly:

That last step is where Trackingplan fits. It learns from real traffic which events and parameters your site sends, compares every hour against that baseline, and warns you when a call or booking event stops firing, a parameter disappears or campaign values stop following your UTM naming convention. So when local leads drop, you know within hours whether it is the ranking or the tracking.

How to choose

Pick by the job you can't do by hand today. If you don't know where you rank across the city, start with a geo-grid tracker. If your name, address and phone are inconsistent across directories, start with citations. If you manage dozens of locations, a suite like BrightLocal or Semrush Local saves more time than any single feature. And whatever you choose, make sure the measurement on your own site is right, because that is the number the business will judge local SEO by.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best local SEO tools?

It depends on the job. Google Business Profile and Search Console are free and come first. For rankings by area, a geo-grid tracker such as Local Falcon or BrightLocal's Local Search Grid; for citations, Whitespark's Local Citation Finder or Semrush's Listing Management; for an all-in-one dashboard, BrightLocal, Semrush Local or Localo. Add GA4 with tagged profile links to measure what the visibility is worth.

Are there free local SEO tools?

Yes. Google Business Profile shows searches, calls, direction requests and website clicks for your listing; Search Console shows the queries and pages that bring organic traffic; and GA4 with UTM parameters on your profile links shows what those visits do on your site. Most paid tools also offer a free trial or a free audit.

What is a local rank tracker?

A tool that checks where a business appears in Google Maps and the local pack for a keyword, from a specific location. Geo-grid trackers run the same search from many points around the business and show the result as a map, because local rankings change from one street to the next.

How do you measure local SEO results?

Track three layers: visibility (rankings by area and profile views), actions on the profile (calls, directions and website clicks in the Business Profile performance report) and actions on your site (calls, bookings and store locator use as GA4 events, with the profile's website link tagged with UTMs). Then check that the events keep firing after every release.
